Cornwall's three Liberal Democrat MPs have welcomed the news that the Conservative leadership on Cornwall Council were defeated in their moves to hike-up council tax by 2% and the Liberal Democrat budget alternative succeeded by 60 votes to 42 at yesterday's crunch meeting.

Stephen Gilbert, MP for St Austell & Newquay, commented:

"I am delighted that the Liberal Democrats on Cornwall Council have succeeded in freezing our council tax, and investing in our services. The party's budget alternative will see real investment in council services, reductions in parking charges, investment in road repairs and a spring clean for Cornwall.

"All this, and more, is being achieved by simply maintaining our council tax collection rates, cutting the council's spend on self-promotion, and reining in the wastage on external consultants.

"The Conservative Group at County Hall is in complete disarray. Conservative Council Leader, Jim Currie, was determined to inflict a near 2% council tax rise for local residents, with no plans to improve the services that local people rely on.

"It's clear that only the Liberal Democrats are standing up for local people and delivering a fair deal for local services. As the council elections approach in just two months time, local people will have to decide what future they want for the Duchy: a bedraggled Conservative administration, or a fair deal with the Lib Dems."

Dan Rogerson further added:

"It is telling that despite having a big majority on the Council, the Conservative and Independent administration could not even agree on something as fundamental as the budget.

"Despite being in opposition to this increasingly farcical administration, it was left to the Liberal Democrats to come up with a way forward. Fortunately local people will have their chance in May to express their opinion on the way that Conservatives and Independents have failed to tackle all the big issues over the past 4 years."
