Green Energy Cornwall

November 26, 2007 12:00 AM

Cornwall County Council has been named runner-up "green energy champion" in the 2007 South West England Green Energy Awards.

The Liberal Democrat-led County Council was praised for its commitment to green energy.

Cornwall was one of three local authorities shortlisted for the award in the 'most proactive local authority' category. Senior councillors say the authority has made great strides in the development of renewable energy policies, since Liberal Democrats took control in 2005.

Speaking after receiving the award Lib Dem Group Leader Bryan Preston said:

"We are committed to making Cornwall a green peninsular, and to protecting the special environment we have here. This is clear recognition of the work we have put in.

"This is a great start but we all still have more to do if we are going to realise our goal of making Cornwall truly green.

"There are definite clusters of activity on renewable energy emerging in Cornwall due to organisations and individuals having a specific remit to stimulate innovative projects and new business activity".

Liberal Democrat councillors also congratulated Tim German, of the Cornwall Sustainable Energy Partnership for winning 'South West Renewable Energy Champion' and South Wheatley Environmental Trust, based near Launceston, for winning 'Best Sustainable Energy Community'.
