Cornwall's Liberal Democrat MPs today (Wednesday) said they would oppose Royal Mail proposals to "refocus" the one-price-goes-anywhere service which keeps contact with Cornwall at the same price as with the rest of the country.
The company hopes to increase stamp prices for residents and small businesses in order to cut charges for large business mail. Royal Mail also proposes that uniform charges for business mail should end.
The five-strong group of MPs says that Royal Mail needs to invest in modern technology to update its sorting systems, so it can compete with new entrants into the postal market.
Commenting, North Cornwall's MP, Dan Rogerson said:
"The poorest and most peripheral areas of the country will be most disadvantaged by Royal Mail's proposals.
"It is unacceptable that Royal Mail's profitability should rely on hitting people in Cornwall."
Falmouth and Camborne MP, Julia Goldsworthy, added:
"Ministers should free Royal Mail from Treasury restrictions so it can borrow on a commercial basis and invest in the modern sorting technologies already used by its competitors.
"It would be grossly unfair to provide cuts in charges to those in London and the South East by charging people in the Westcountry more to post a letter.
"Cornwall's Liberal Democrat MPs will fight any such proposals tooth and nail."
